Accident Investigation

When an accident or near miss occurs, it provides an opportunity to review processes currently in place to determine if safety improvements can be made. The goal of the investigation is to identify the cause and prevent the accident from happening again. This training program uses lecture format and takes approximately 30 minutes.

Bloodborne Pathogens

Electrical Safety

This training session is intended to educate the average worker about electrical hazards and how to inspect for them. It covers how electricity works, how it impacts the human body, how to work safely with electrical equipment and awareness of electrical hazards at the workplace. The training program uses lecture format and takes approximately 30 minutes.

Ergonomics

Cumulative trauma disorders (CTSs) continue to be a major concern, costing both employees and employers lost time, productivity and money. This training program will look at some of the basic principles of ergonomics so you can use a common sense approach to working in an ergonomically correct manner. The training program uses lecture format and incorporates the employer's written program where feasible. It takes approximately 45 minutes.

Topics include lifting and repetitive motion injuries, moving food supplies, prevention of cuts and burns, and proper use of cleaning chemicals.

Hand and Portable Power Tool Safety

Hand and portable power tools are used both at work and home, which often leads to complacency. This program will remind employees of the safety precautions that should be considered when working with power tools. The training program uses lecture format and takes approximately 30 minutes.

This class will discuss the chemicals in the workplace, how to determine chemical hazards, and how to protect yourself from those hazards. The employer Hazard Control Plan will also be reviewed. The training program uses lecture format and takes approximately 45 minutes.

HAZWOPER: First Responder Awareness Level

This training session can be used as the foundation for the training requirements of the levels that go beyond First Responder Awareness Level of HAZWOPER. Instruction includes how to recognize a release or spill, how to call for help, and how to evacuate and secure the area. The training program uses lecture format and demonstration and takes approximately 45 minutes.

Hearing Conservation

OSHA requires employers to administer an effective Hearing Conservation Program whenever employee noise exposures equals or exceeds an 8-hour time-weighted average sound level of 85 decibels. Training will address the impact of workplace noise on hearing, advantages and disadvantages of hearing protection devices, and use, care and fit of hearing devices. The training program uses lecture format and display. It takes approximately 45 minutes.

Job Hazard Analysis

Job hazard analysis (JHA) is an essential part of any effective safety program. By getting everyone involved in the process, it provides extra sets of eyes and ears to help identify potential hazards in the workplace. This program will identify the process and the different techniques that can be used to effectively perform a JHA. The training program uses lecture format and takes approximately 30 minutes.

Designed to meet Cal-OSHA minimum requirements for employees who may encounter lead or lead paint while performing their duties.

Lockout/Tagout

This class will instruct employees responsible for the maintenance of electrical equipment in the safe application of the lockout/tagout system. This program uses lecture format and lasts approximately 45 minutes.

Machine Guarding

Machine guarding is an integral part of any safety and health program. As statistics can demonstrate, it is also one aspect of safety that is too often violated. This program will review the reasons for machine guarding and the various types of guards used. It also explores some of the different motions and actions that are readily available on equipment routinely used in the workplace. The training program uses lecture format and takes approximately 45 minutes.

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

The materials safety data sheet (MSDS) is one of the key components of the Hazard Communication Standard. It is the primary tool used by chemical manufacturers to communicate the hazards of their chemicals to users. Employees will learn how to access an MSDS, interpret the information contained in the MSDS, and understand how to use that information to protect against hazards of that particular chemical. The training program uses lecture format and approximately 45 minutes.

New Employee Safety Orientation

This class is a composition of several of the programs offered throughout this catalog and can be customized to the participants and/or district. Please make arrangements four weeks in advance for this class. The training program uses lecture format and may take 3 to 4 hours.

NBSIA is pleased to offer new district employees the chance to learn what safety is all about, what roles they play in site safety, and how they can incorporate safe work practices into their daily routines in order to achieve their goals.

This program, which will take place in NBSIA’s conference room three times throughout the school year, communicates the importance of safe work practices and meets district requirements for Cal/OSHA compliance. Through this training partnership, we can reduce the number of injuries to staff and students, limit lost time from work, and improve employee morale.

This PowerPoint presentation and open discussion will cover many safety topics, including general office safety, fire safety, bloodborne pathogens, and ergonomics. Topics of a more technical nature may be addressed depending upon the registered audience.

Personal Protective Equipment: Hand & Eye

Nearly one-third of work injuries involve the hands, fingers or eyes. They are used in just about every kind of work and therefore, are extremely vulnerable to a number of hazards. This session will discuss the potential hazards in the workplace as well as at home and what can be done to prevent injuries to these critical body parts. The training program uses lecture format and display. It takes approximately 30 minutes.

Playground Inspection & Maintenance

This session uses the CPSC and ASTM playground standards to instruct employees on proper methods and frequency of inspection as well as maintenance and repair. The training program uses lecture format and on-site demonstration and takes approximately 60 minutes.

Playground Supervisors Training

The playground supervisor has a critical role in helping ensure that playgrounds are safe and hazard free.

Training topics will include:

  • General duties of the Playground Supervisor
  • Proper use of play equipment by children
  • Daily visual inspection
  • Screening children entering the play area
  • What to do when an injury occurs
  • Question and answer period

Respiratory Protection

One of the most common means of protecting employee health is respiratory protection. However, there are several legal requirements that must be followed to properly use respiratory protection. This program focuses on the fundamental issues of respiratory protection as well as the basic regulatory requirements. SEMS (Standardized Emergency Management System)

Section 8607 of the California Government Code requires that school districts be prepared to respond to emergencies using the Standardized Emergency Management System. This necessitates that all school personnel be trained in how the system works. This session meets the requirements for the introductory or awareness level of SEMS training and takes approximately 2 hours.

Any time hazardous materials are in use, spill prevention and control is an important program. An effective spill prevention program can prevent additional employee exposures to hazardous chemicals. This training session will give details about spill control procedures - especially for those responsible for spill cleanup. Stress is a reality for almost every work environment. Office workers, management, and production employees all experience job-related stress. It can be caused by a large workload, pressure from supervisors, co-worker personalities, unfamiliar situations, etc. This session will discuss what causes stress, how stress can impact us, and what we can do to alleviate stress. The training program uses lecture and discussion and takes approximately 30 minutes.

Issues will include violence prevention policies, perpetrators and potential victims, stages of violent behavior, warning signs, recommended security measures, and intervention options.
